Day 7 - Saturday August 13 - Catching up ...

It's not so much that we had to rearrange most of our trip because of the cam shaft failure but I must confess to making a foolish mistake that almost cost Jeanie and me some "down" time.  When Jeanie spotted Brown's Flat she called to me through our intercom to stop so she could take pictures.  There was a road that contacted the road we were on but was entering  a VERY acute angle - and I tried to make the turn!  Bad move - even at a very slow speed the bike jacknifed and started to go down!  (Believe it or not we estimate it leaned over somewhere between 45 to 40 degrees).  Now the bike weighs 640 lbs.  I weigh almost 200 lbs, Jeanie weighs about 110 lbs and we have about 70 lbs of cloths, gear, etc.  So a total of 1020 lbs.!!!  I am NOT strong enough to hold this up - BUT I did!  Long enough for Jeanie to get safely off the bike sideways and push on the sissy bar to help me stand it up again.  There was no way I was going to let this weight fall on my dear wife's leg and be trapped in the middle of nowhere!  I will leave it to each of you to speculate how this is possible.

So the point is that my arms and legs are strained and sore.  And so I am being extra cautious the way I ride for the next few days until my arms and legs are back to normal.

Slept soundly last night.
Basically now caught up to schedule.

So back to the adventure...
When we entered Nova Scotia we stop and an information area and met the pleasant and enthusiastic young man, Randy.  He is from Connecticut and is riding a new V-Max.  The V-MAX is no longer a 1200 but a beefy 1700cc!!!  Randy is a very pleasant and encouraging person to talk to.  He made us feel more confident about our trip by sharing some of the difficuties he had encountered and overcome.

Nova Scotia is pretty flat when you first arrive.

1020 lbs - Loaded up!  Not a scratch on her?!?

This picture is for our grandson Trystan.
Lot's of REALLY BIG trucks out here Buddy.

So we're off to Baddeck today and starting Cabot Trail in earnest tomorrow.  My front tire tread is looking a little low to me - more than enough for slow speeds along the Cabot Trail but I will probably want a new one for the trip home.  Rear tire looks fine but I may replace them both.

Gotta ride, BCINGU...

  1. Hey Guys
Good to hear that you are back on track. Get ready for some beautiful scenery on the Cabot Trail.
Judging from the pictures, the weather looks great.
In thinking about the bike just about going down, it is always amazing what a person can do when faced with what looks like an insurmountable obstacle. But it does sound like you are "paying for it" physically. It doesn't sound like you strained your back which would have been easily possible too.
Glad you were able to sleep. Hopefully you had another good one last night as you ready yourself for "The Trail".
    Keep smilin'.
    Dave
